Automation Isn’t Expensive. Solving the Wrong Problem Is.


Conversations about laboratory workflow automation often start with equipment. We think they should start with the workflow.


When something isn’t performing as expected, it’s tempting to assume the answer is more technology. Sometimes it is.


But sometimes the real bottleneck is a handoff. A manual step. A scheduling issue. Or simply the way the process was designed.


Before selecting a technology, it helps to understand how work actually moves through the system. Where does it wait? Where does variation enter? Which handoffs require intervention? Which step is really limiting performance?


A technically capable solution aimed at the wrong constraint can add cost and complexity without meaningfully improving the process.


Good engineering isn’t about finding reasons to automate.


It’s about understanding the system before deciding what the right answer is.


Automation becomes valuable when it addresses a validated need. Otherwise, we risk solving the wrong problem surprisingly well.


Good engineering begins by identifying the system’s true bottleneck, not by choosing the most advanced technology.
