Before You Automate, Understand the Laboratory Workflow

Laboratory automation is not always the first solution. Understanding the workflow is. In modern laboratories, automation is often presented as the answer to throughput, consistency, and operational efficiency. But automation does not automatically solve an inefficient process. If the underlying workflow contains unnecessary steps, bottlenecks, excessive handling, poor information flow, or unclear process ownership, automating that workflow can simply make the existing problems happen faster. At COLOMBA Biomedical, we approach laboratory engineering differently.

Start with the system

Before recommending a technology, we look at how the laboratory actually operates.

This means understanding:

  • How samples, materials, and information move through the workflow

  • Where manual interventions occur

  • Where bottlenecks develop

  • How equipment interacts with existing processes

  • Where errors, delays, or unnecessary handling occur

  • What the laboratory is ultimately trying to improve

This system-level perspective helps distinguish between a technology problem and a workflow problem.

Automation should support the workflow

The right technology should fit the process, not force the process to fit the technology. Sometimes the best solution is full automation. Sometimes it is a targeted piece of equipment. Sometimes it is a workflow modification, better integration between systems, or simply eliminating an unnecessary step.

The objective is not to automate everything. The objective is to create a better-performing system.

Engineering before equipment

This principle guides how COLOMBA Biomedical approaches laboratory challenges. We combine engineering analysis with equipment and technology sourcing to help laboratories identify solutions that are technically appropriate, operationally practical, and aligned with their actual needs.

Because better laboratory technology starts by better understanding the laboratory workflow.
